In 2013, AHDI rebranded our credentialing exams to both better align with our name and to reflect the expanded skill set competencies noted on the additional blueprint domains. CMTs will not be required to pursue the CHDS; doing so will be optional and voluntary. AHDI will continue to service the CMT credential under its current recredentialing program requirements. For more information about these changes and to view frequently asked questions (FAQs), visit the Rebranding the AHDI Credentialing Exams web page.
Certified medical transcriptionists (CMTs) and Certified healthcare documentation specialists (CHDSs) maintain their credential through participation in continuing education activities relevant to medical transcription/healthcare documentation. Recertification is required every three years. CMTs/CHDSs maintain and build on their competency in the field of healthcare documentation with continuing education (CE) activities. This is necessary for the practitioner to function effectively in today’s fast-paced healthcare environment.
A minimum of 30 continuing education credits (CECs) must be accrued with at least 24 of these in the core areas of Clinical Medicine, Medical Transcription Tools, Technology and the Workplace, and Medicolegal Issues. The remaining 6 required CECs may be obtained in either the Core areas mentioned above or the Optional areas of Complementary Medicine and Professional Development. It is recommended that CMTs/CHDSs obtain more than the minimum 30 CECs, in the event a question arises as to the creditworthiness of an activity.
Membership in AHDI is not a requirement for the CMT/CHDS credential; however, it is encouraged because of the opportunities and benefits afforded members.
