Understanding of AHDI’s mission:
My understanding of AHDI’s mission is that it promotes the education and usefulness of the professionals we used to call medical transcriptionists (and which I must admit I continue to call myself). The MTs that I know love learning, adore doing research and are 100% committed to getting things right. As the EHR gains market share and the healthcare industry changes, I am increasingly concerned that the documentation quality and oversight skills that MTs offer are being shunted aside by short-sighted bean counters, manipulative mega-service owners, and prevaricating software vendors. I worry for the healthcare profession and for myself as a patient, that the MT’s role will be lost. I want to see us fight back.

Goals and Objectives:
More than anything, I believe AHDI needs to shepherd a national study of healthcare documentation specialists’ effect on the medical record, specifically in recognizing and correcting dictator-created errors (not speech recognition ones). This study must be done nationally, using recognized academic and scientific standards, and it must be published in respected and recognized journals, such as JAHIMA or in HIMSS’s journal, if not in those of medical societies. The results of the study, which I believe would cement the physician-documentation specialist relationship once and for all, must then be publicized to the general public as well as the medical community at large. I am so sick and tired of hearing know-nothings and software vendors proclaim that medical transcription is dead that I could just scream. Only such a scientific effort will resolve this issue.

Understanding of AHDI’s mission:
To educate people about the importance of accurate healthcare documentation. The goal is to accomplish this through an education of our MTs/MCS/MLSs.

Goals and Objectives:
Continuing education on the importance of a credentialed workforce. This is a passionate subject to me, especially with the changes in our country and the global economy and workforce. The education push needs to be directed at the entire industry, not just MTs/MCS/MLSs and MTSOs. There are many other areas of healthcare that need to be reached and understand our role in healthcare. Years ago medical librarians went down a similar road and succeeded in becoming recognized as key players in the industry and grew into a strong, recognized association. We need to press forward through the technology changes and industry changes toward our goals.
