Dear Colleagues, I am writing you today in case any of you are familiar with Genny Smith an AHDI Past President. We are doing this "chipin" to help her. She has done so much for so many and now on a fixed income and the recent so unfortunate death of her son in a horrible car accident she just could use our help. No amount is too little. I sure an with you and times are tight. However, you might consider this our "red kettle" for a dear friend. Thank you so much for anything that you can do. Hugs to you all in District 2.

Warm Summer greetings from your NLB! The meeting held June 14th brings you the following highlights to keep you informed and to let you know what your board is working on. Board News: District 1 Director (Jay Vance, CHP, CMT) resignation called for the appointment of a replacement District 1 Director to fill the remainder of his term. In accordance with the bylaws and policies, the selection process was held and voted on during this board meeting. We are pleased to announce Barb Marques, CMT, AHDI-F, is the new District 1 Director through August 31, 2013. Marques’s At-Large director seat on the Board, with a term ending on August 31, 2012, will be filled by appointment of one of the new incoming board members following the results of the election.
Treasurer’s Report: Bonnie Monico, CMT, AHDI-F, provided an update report on the ongoing progress made with finances in a number of areas of cost reductions and successful negotiations to keep costs low.
New Dashboard: A dashboard of important metrics is in draft status that will be provided to board members to help us track progress on important strategic initiatives and goals.
Online Webinar Library: This new member benefit is scheduled to be launched in late summer 2012.
All credit-worthy webinars will be accessible through this portal.
ACE: Reminder that this year’s ACE in Indianapolis will be an exciting event! Registration updates were provided to the board. The Great Debate will again be a feature of this year’s convention and the topics are shaping up to inspire lively dialogue! The Great Debate is certain to be an even bigger hit than it was with last year’s debut of this added session. Make plans now to be there! Position Paper: AHDI’s position paper on the evolution and importance of healthcare documentation in the EHR and a recommendation for a reexamination of compensation plans is well-underway. It is being reviewed for additional content and is planned for release by ACE 2012.
Public Awareness Campaign: Karen Fox-Acosta, CMT, AHDI-F, President-elect outlined the plans for raising awareness and further engaging the public in an updated version of the “Have You Read Your Medical Record” campaign with an emphasis on patient safety. This is scheduled to launch in late 2012 and run as a year-long campaign. Partial Narrative: Mark Christensen of WedChart MD presented a recent webinar in support of inclusion of narrative in EHR documentation. A number of board members have formed a sub-group to further review and determine feasibility for AHDI involvement.
Credentialing Development Team: The CDT gathered feedback in a recent survey about the renaming of our credentials in view of the new shift to healthcare documentation specialist. This information was shared and all board members will be reviewing all feedback and meet for further discussion and decisions.
Hope you have a GREAT summer, and we cannot wait to see you in Indy!

Here's a report from the National Leadership Board meeting of 5/10/12 for your review and comment:
Greetings from your National Leadership Board (NLB)! Our meeting on May 10th was held with the following highlights brought to you as another communication outlet to keep you informed of tasks we are working on.
BOARD UPDATES: We are pleased to announce Jill Devrick as the newest member of the national leadership board. Jill currently works as Product Solutions Advisor for 3M, is the chair of the Managers/Supervisors Alliance, and joined the NLB in April 2012 to fulfill the board position and term vacant by Lisa Tunzi’s resignation. We welcome Jill as a director at large. AHDI’s governance and component association policies and procedures were reviewed and the updates went to a motion, and were passed. Working closely with the board, the Bylaws committee submitted recommendations for updates and those were passed as well. A summary of the changes will be posted on the AHDI website and distributed by email to our component officers very soon.
EXTERNSHIP WHITE PAPER PROPOSAL: Betsy Ertel, AHDI-F, chair of AHDI’s Educators Alliance Steering Committee, presented on the proposal for an externship program white paper. She shared the many benefits of publishing and providing an excellent road map for bridging the gap for students graduating from an approved school to becoming a work-ready MT. A motion was made, seconded and passed to proceed with this well-thought out and much needed white paper.
FUTURE ROLES SURVEY: AHDI President Sherry Doggett presented on the findings of this survey, which was conducted in conjunction with Gary David, PhD, of Bentley University. It provides excellent guidance for further analysis of the data gleaned from the survey, and AHDI’s Managers/Supervisors Alliance will work through next steps in evolving the data into potential future roles in healthcare documentation.
ACE UPDATE: There is popular demand to continue on with a well-attended session from last year’s ACE and that is The Great Debate. Topics to include in this year’s debate were discussed and we are looking for additional subject-matter to make this year’s debate another lively exchange. ACE 2013 is confirmed now for the Buena Vista Palace in Orlando, Florida. We are inviting our members to help select a theme for this event. We are all very happy to be returning to Florida for our annual convention.
FINANCES: I provided the treasurer’s report on current outstanding accounts payable along with continued successful reductions to overall debt.
STRATEGIC PRIORITIES: Karen Fox-Acosta, CMT, AHDI-F, President-elect, proposed a special one-hour meeting to cover the strategic plan and priorities in order to give it adequate time for review, update and revision. Following the Board’s review of the draft at the special meeting, we will seek input from AHDI member volunteers before the updated plan is finalized.
MEANINGFUL USE STAGE 2: Fox-Acosta updated the NLB that AHDI has supported the Health Story Project comments, which were submitted to ONC (Office of the National Coordinator for Health IT).
OFFICER ELECTIONS: The timeline for this year’s NLB officer elections will be during the board meeting at ACE. Letters of intent are to be submitted to Sherry Doggett, AHDI President, by July 30, 2012. NEXT: The next regularly scheduled NLB meeting is June 14, 2012, and as always, gallery members are welcome to participate.
Only 6 days of school left for my granddaughter and then she will be a 2nd grader.
Just to bring you all up-to-date my mother broke her hip and had re-do surgery on April 17th. She went to the best rehab center and she is doing great. We hope that she will be ready to go home back to her own house around June 9th. If you are in the habit of praying you keep on doing it for her continued recovery. She is singing and writing poems again and I am so blessed to have the mother back that I knew she was in there but the miracle medication Symbyax is just a "miracle drug" in her case. It really was not dementia she passed all those tests with flying colors even serial 7's backwards.
Okay, let me hear from you. What are you all doing for MT Week? Let me know I would sure be interested in how you celebrate!

http://www.boston.com/lifestyle/health/articles/2012/04/30/goodbye_paper/?s_campaign=8315 It's a very interesting article looking at EHRs and how the conversation is shifting toward patient safety. This would make a great post on the Lounge with commentary on the theme of National MT Week, National Hometown Advocacy Week, and discussing AHDI initiatives in this arena. Any volunteers?

Hello District 2!! It sure is fun to share great news. Hope you are all thinking about attending ACE if you can. Extensive work has been underway to ensure AHDI flourishes in this new environment for our members—our shareholders and stakeholders. We are leaving no stone unturned as we work to strengthen AHDI’s finances and ensure we are delivering relevant and timely benefits, products, and services. Expenses have been trimmed, our product development and member benefit pipeline is being enhanced and expanded, our strategic priorities are being reevaluated and updated, and contracts are being renegotiated. We operate on a shoestring budget; however, that does not stifle progress and innovation. To that end, we have exciting updates to share regarding AHDI's Annual Convention & Expo (ACE 2012). Our goal has been to make ACE more affordable for our members and we have been renegotiating our agreement with the JW Marriott Indianapolis, which was originally booked in 2008. The hotel has offered us unprecedented discounts and options to make ACE 2012 more affordable for both you and AHDI. ACE 2012 attendees staying at the JW Marriott Indianapolis will receive these great perks: 1. NEW! $25 daily credit per room toward food and beverages purchased at the hotel, including concession stands in the ACE exhibit hall. Our discounted group rate is $175 per night plus tax. The VIP lunches on Friday and Saturday are being replaced with lunch on your own, during which you can use your daily credit toward food purchased within the hotel. 2. NEW! Free Internet access in your hotel room for your entire stay (regular rate: $12.95 per day). 3. $8 off the daily onsite parking rate (regular rate: $28.00 per day). 4. Entry into the raffles previously advertised as part of the ACE VIP Program. The JW Marriott Indianapolis has also agreed to provide free wireless Internet access in the ACE meeting rooms and exhibit hall (a $4,000 value). So you'll be able to stay connected the entire time. To reduce AHDI's cost to hold ACE and our potential liability of not filling enough hotel rooms, the JW Marriott is lowering our room block commitment, reducing the minimum amount of food/beverages we must purchase, and discounting our costs for food and other services. Because we have received these concessions from the hotel and modified the food events for the convention, AHDI wants to pass our savings on to you by lowering our registration fees by $75 and extending the early-bird rate until August 6, 2012. If you have already registered for ACE 2012, you will receive a refund for the difference. Our new registration fees for ACE 2012 are: Student, Associate Student & Post-graduate Members – $225 Individual Professional Members – $285 Associate Members – $395 List Price – $525 Register online (click now to see the added bonus for registering early) The program will kick off Wednesday evening with a welcome reception in the exhibit hall. Educational sessions will be held Thursday – Saturday. There will be close to 40 sessions to choose from and you can view the revised schedule of events online. Please note that the change in schedule also includes moving the awards ceremony to Thursday, August 9, and there will no longer be a banquet on Saturday evening. As part of our renegotiations, the hotel has agreed to setup concession stands for lunch on Thursday and breakfast on Friday in the exhibit hall, where you can use your $25 daily credit received from staying at the JW Marriott. This new format is part of reducing the master account liability for AHDI while giving attendees added flexibility in their food selections. We recognize that you may be able to find a lower hotel rate nearby; however, this hurts AHDI financially if we do not fill our contracted room block. If you would like to find a roommate, there's a group setup on ACE365.org called "Attendee Resources Group." We understand that as you've been reading this, you may have questions. We've started a list of frequently asked questions to help provide a place where you can get quick answers. And, as always, you can contact our staff anytime toll free: 1-800-982-2182 (direct: 1-209-527-9620) or by email: ahdi@ahdionline.org. This will be the event of the year you won't want to miss. We hope you will join us for ACE 2012 in Indianapolis! Sincerely yours, Linda G. Brady, CAE Interim CEO PS: Watch your email inbox for details regarding ACE 2013! We will be in Orlando, FL, where we'll celebrate AHDI's 35th anniversary!

Dear Colleagues:
I am putting together a team of volunteers for a short-term project to review the recently released MU2 proposed rules from ONC. Our goal is to identify areas in the proposed rules that directly or indirectly affect our profession and then provide a summary of findings to the Advocacy and Alliance steering committee, the AHDI board and ultimately our members through Membership Matters. The outcome of the project will also help generate an open-comment letter template with plans to have our leadership, component leaders, members and colleagues submit to ONC during the open comment period which ends in early May. The project duration is starting now and will probably run through the end of April.
My phone and email are listed below. Please call me or email me to volunteer and/or inquire about the project.

Just thinking about all the sweethearts out there and decided I should write you all a note. Hope you are all doing well. We recently had our National Leadership Board meeting on Thursday evening 2/9/12. We have many exciting things in the works. We also formed some subcommittees within the NLB to work specifically on our communication with everyone within the association.
Several leaders were recently involved in a call with AHIMA National Association and members also from the CDIA Boards and the new CEO of AHIMA was the HIM Director when our beloved Marilyn Craddock was with us. So Lynn Thomas-Gordon really does know how important what we do on a daily basis. There will be another meeting in Baltimore in April in conjunction with the CDIA/AHIMA meeting and more news to come as we work closely with our alliances and this promotes great teamwork within our associations. Always looking for opportunities so stay tuned for more collaborative news on that subject.
If you have a component or a state/regional newsletter that you would like for me to have a spot in I would love to provide a paragraph or two for your newsletters so let me know who to contact and I will get in touch with them so I can meet deadlines and stay in touch with all of you.
A couple of bullets for you and highlights you might want to share with your members. · Nominating Committee had their first meeting: · There will be 3 openings for Directors At Large this year. · If you know of anyone that is looking for an extraordinary opportunity, please get those names to myself or anyone on the NLB for that matter. I also believe that the Nominating Committee is also listed at the web site. Another important thing to remember is how important it is that you exercise your right to vote. I will keep you posted. · Hope your members are making plans for Indianapolis in August plans are underway for another spectacular meeting. Don't forget to get your meetings on the event calendar and check that often so you can keep up with events that are close around you. · Legislative Issues: We are not planning a formal "Advocacy Summit" for 2012, instead we would like to find ways to help you do something locally and involve your membership. More news on that coming soon. This was just a tickler so you are ready and on the lookout for more things you can do on a local/state/regional level.
It has been a busy winter, now looking forward to spring. Would love to hear from you. Please let me know how I can help your component with anything.
Yours to count on,

I believe that yesterday or the day before a notice went out to all components about the Affiliation Agreement and making sure that election result forms were back into the Administrative Office by November 15th which is just around the corner. WELCOME District 2 Members!
This will be one of the ways that we communicate with each other during the next three years. This will be the one central spot that if something is happening within the Association that you can find out and share information about what is happening in our District. It will be a spot where I can update you with the happenings and endeavors of our strategic plans. We can share ideas here, post information here, and just keep up with each other since all Districts have a vast area to cover.
I want you to feel comfortable coming here and sharing your needs and successes within your local components and/or state/regional associations.
Let me start out by introducing myself to all of you so that you know a little bit about me since I don't know all of you. I have been involved with our association for over 35 years. Yes, that would make me 57 and I am very proud and earned every wrinkle. Did you know that wrinkles give you character and I am definitely a character. I have been married for 37 years later this month. I have two great kids, a son and a daughter. My daughter has also blessed me with two great granddaughters so yes, I am a granny. My husband Mike is a great guy and quite a character himself.
Now let's talk about what may be ahead of us. I think that everyone could agree that with all of the mergers and acquisitions that have happened just within the last several months who you work for as far as large transcription services is shrinking a bit. This also has an effect on the Association as when you have two vendors that now are one vendor it shrinks the sales market a bit as well. We have all seen changes happen over the last few years and there will be more. No longer can we sit around and think that our world will not change because it is changing on a daily basis. We had a fabulous keynote speaker at ACE and if your chapter or state/regional did not purchase the ACE DVD then you still have an opportunity to do that. Kathy B. Dempsey was fabulous and gave us all some insight into what we have done in the past and what needs to happen in the future. "Shed or Your Dead" is a fabulous book and I also have her CD. It is packed full of practical strategies for overcoming resistance and embracing change. Her friend, Lenny, whom I got to know very well, is a lizard. Did you know that if lizards are not able to shed their skin the die? I could really identify with this concept. If we are not willing to shed the old ways of doing things, we could die!
We have a new format with a new National Leadership Board (NLP) and we have a new structure in place to help make this happen with a new level of enthusiasm gained by all of the members who were fortunate to attend ACE in Phoenix. One of the main things that I took away from this years meeting was this, "People can handle just about anything if they have three things, honesty, a plan, and support!" Thank you for allowing me to be your support. Now, let's get going together and create our new action plans. For District 2 correspondence to help me keep everything straight between work and personal, I have created an email account BonnieDistrict2@gmail.com This will help me help you in the most efficient manner. I am so excited and this all became official on September 1, 2011. You can email me, post questions here or call me at 1-402-330-0293, that phone has the answering machine so I won't miss any contact from you. I do live in Nebraska which is CST and you can just keep that in mind because I probably will not be answering the phone at 3 a.m. Here is one of my favorite quotes… "Being happy doesn't mean everything is perfect. It means you've decided to see beyond the imperfections."
