Critical Thinking in Healthcare Documentation
Critical thinking, an indispensable skill for healthcare documentation specialists, is the process of using what you already know to discover what you do not know. The components of critical thinking–analysis, synthesis, and reflection–can be learned and improved with practice. As a transcriptionist, you must be a problem solver, detective, and risk manager. You must constantly question what you hear and evaluate it within the context of the report for coherency and reasonableness. In other words, you must be a critical thinker. Analytical thinking is the foundation for transcribing and editing efficiently and accurately. View full session description.

In this session the presenter will help ease your fears by providing demonstrations of both assisted speech recognition (ASR) editing as well as electronic health record (EHR) entry. Students will learn modern skills for how to interact with speech recognition and structured data associated with the electronic medical record (EMR) and meaningful use. Bathrobes to Briefcases-The Professional Way to Find That Virtual Job
Working from home has its perks—wearing a bathrobe to the office, for instance—but homebound professionals still have to be, well, professional. Recruiters often have a laundry list of common mistakes HDSs make when applying for jobs, such as calling to complain about the application process, sending cover letters with typos, or using inappropriate email addresses. This presentation will teach you the finer points of work-from-home professionalism such as what to put on your resume, how to navigate the application and start-up paperwork process, how to avoid the faux pas that will get your resume dropped to the bottom of the pile, and how to have a successful phone interview.
