I missed attending the convention several years ago when it was held in Nashville at the Gaylord Opryland Resort. I would really enjoy visiting that location and I have family just below the state border in Alabama. Another trip to Las Vegas is always fun or somewhere in Southern California (San Diego perhaps where I live). We have the world famous Balboa Park, SeaWorld, and LEGOLAND. Further north in Anaheim, we have Disneyland and Universal Studios with Six Flags Magic Mountain and Knott's Berry Farm in Los Angeles.

The last one in Portland was really nice. Hotel was nice with great views. Getting around was convenient. Took the jet boats and had a ball. Anything on either coast is going to have a lot of tourists during the summer. Oakland is appealing to me only in that my daughter lives in the hills, but otherwise it is the pits to get around, even with BART, and safety is always an issue. Napa is pretty far north and, again, it is tourist season, and one has to go through Richmond with miserable traffic and safety issues. Anything in the southeast is subject to extremes of weather, such as tornadoes and lightening storms, that come up from the south/southwest across Florida, Georgia, the Carolinas, etc.-- I have lived in many of those places. How about Salt Lake City? Boise, Idaho? Denver, Colorado? Colorado Springs or Boulder? Memphis, Nashville, Atlanta? Love Chicago also.
In lieu of Portland, OR, there may be a more cost effective alternative with all the benefits of Portland, and that is Vancouver, WA, which is just over the Columbia River from Portland and a huge medical community with OHSU in Portland and large health systems in both states.
Where in Oakland, CA? It does have the benefit of a medical mecca nearby, a BART ride into San Francisco, and close to Napa (wineries). :-)
The outerbanks of NC such as Kitty Hawk or Nags Head would be a great place with the beaches, historic sites like the Wright Brothers Memorial and the Cape Hateras Lighthouse would make these areas a great place for the convention.
