Under the Microscope: A Microbiology Primer

This presentation will provide MTs and QA editors some basic background knowledge in microbiology. Topics include laboratory identification using cell and colony morphologies, differential staining, and selective and differential growth media; antibiotic resistance; a general discussion of pathogenic species; and the cell structure differences that allow for differential staining techniques such as the Gram stain and the acid-fast stain.

Speaker Bio

Brett McCutcheon studied microbiology at The Ohio State University, and also worked as a student in the laboratory of one of his professors. He began working as an MT in 1995, and earned the CMT certification in 1999 and the AHDI Fellow designation in 2008. He currently works as a technical analyst and project manager on the implementations team at Transcend Services, Inc., and is also currently serving on the AHDI Board of Directors.
