With the federal government investing $17 billion in healthcare technology over the next five years, the percentage of hospitals and healthcare networks using electronic health records (EHR) and computerized provider order entry (CPOE) is about to skyrocket. The largest provider of charity care in Central Texas, the Seton Family of Hospitals in Austin, began using EHR in 2005 and CPOE in 2007. Currently, Seton's EHR interfaces with over two dozen ancillary systems and handles orders, documentation, diagnostic data, and patient information for over 4,000 hospital staff and physicians daily. Gerry Lewis will discuss the advantages of EHR and CPOE, as well as some key findings learned during installation and implementation. Topics reviewed include the rare opportunity for facility-wide clinical transformation, the importance of balancing requests for customization with the benefit of standardization, and the necessity of clinically-led on-site support personnel.
