In recent years, professional ethics have oftentimes been seriously questioned, resulting in a greater demand for transparency and public outcry for accountability. This presentation will begin with a definition of ethics and ethical behavior, as well as their role in the workplace. Attendees will leave with an understanding of why people act unethically; the importance of ethics and having a code of ethics; the costs of unethical behavior; how to create, define, and educate staff or members in the interpretation of a code of ethics; and how to respond to ethical violations. Session will conclude with discussion of a few case studies. This session is intended for all HIM and healthcare documentation professionals, as well as business owners..
