Through policy followed with funding, President Obama has indicated transforming patient health data into electronic medical records is a national priority, not only as a cost-saving measure but also from a patient privacy position. By 2015, everyone will be required to have an electronic health record (EHR). A Health IT professional is qualified to support the adoption and implementation of EHRs, administer information exchanges across healthcare providers and public health authorities, and engineer the redesign of workflows within health care settings to gain the quality and efficiency benefits of EHRs. Attendees will learn about an intensive online continuing education program, training for six different Health IT workforce roles. Within 2 years, the grant program is designed to train 300 experienced healthcare and information technology professionals who will set in placed the infrastructure for the implementation of the EHR nationwide.
Speaker Bio
Dr. Tyson-Howard is the Department Chair of Health Information Technology at Houston Community College. She is also the program manager for the HITECH Community College Consortium grant providing the six-month EHR training and serves on the advisory council for the HIT-Pro national exam. She holds the credential of a Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA) with a master's of Health Care Administration from Texas Women's University and a doctorate degree in Higher Education Administration from Texas Southern University. She has written grants and authored textbooks, CDs, and articles for the advancement of Health Information Technology research and education.
