This presentation will teach MT practitioners how to quickly and effectively decode and understand foreign accents. Judy Ravin, President of the Accent Reduction Institute (ARI), is the industry leader in accent-related training programs and inventor of the patent-pending training software, Decoding Foreign Accents® (DFA). Because upwards of 35% of physicians practicing in the US are foreign born, the ability to understand heavily accented speech has become imperative for the medical transcription profession. A lack of accent comprehension proficiency impedes both accuracy and productivity. Participants of this presentation will learn how to substitute, or 'plug in', correct words and sounds in order to instantly comprehend the dictations of non-native English speakers. Included in the presentation is an interactive practicum with health-care specific terminology and phraseology. Ravin has been teaching accent comprehension to MT practitioners, the US Marine Corps, the US Air Force, NATO, and first responders since 2007. Ravin's objective is to provide techniques and strategies that minimize listening error and maximize effective communication in a global workforce..
