MTIA Registered Apprenticeship Program
Currently Undergoing Revision

The Medical Transcription Industry Association (MTIA) is working with the U.S. Department of Labor to update the MTIA Registered Apprenticeship Program. In order to provide employers with improved flexibility and apprentices with excellent on-the-job training opportunities, specific changes have been recommended by the MTIA Workforce Development Committee. During this brief period of transition, we encourage you to hold submission of apprenticeship applications while we implement new policies and procedures as quickly and efficiently as possible. Our goal is to have the revised apprenticeship program up and running in early 2009. We are very excited about the positive changes requested and look forward to sharing them with you.

PLEASE NOTE: The following prerequisites to participate in the apprenticeship program will not change.

  • Apprentices must not be less than 18 years of age.
  • A high school diploma or GED equivalency is required.
  • Applicants must provide proof of successful completion of an AHDI-Approved Medical Transcription Training Program.
  • Applicants must provide a copy of the Registered Medical Transcriptionist (RMT) credential.

If you are interested in receiving notice when the new program is available, or have questions, please contact

In addition to applying for apprenticeship, AHDI provides many other helpful aids as you consider choices for your career in healthcare documentation. Membership in AHDI presents valuable opportunities to network not only with other novices, but with experienced MT’s, as well. The ebook, “Getting Your Foot in the Door: Two Years’ Experience not Required” is an excellent resource that can be purchased and downloaded instantly through the AHDI eBook Store or purchased by phone by calling our toll free number 800-982-2182.
