Networking in Groups

Beyond the networking that is afforded by events and component involvement, the association has established special interest groups and task forces for those members who wish to focus specifically on key industry roles and issues. Special interest groups meet regularly to define and shape ways that the association can address the needs of those membership sectors. Task forces are created to research and report on specific issues or trends and to assist association leaders in making strategic decisions based on that research and development.

In addition to regular meetings, typically by webinar, these groups also communicate regularly through an email listserv. This is an ongoing way for members of these groups to network with each other and stay in close contact and for all members of the group to stay in the loop of ongoing discussions.

For each of the special interest groups and task forces indicated below, you will find a link that takes you to that group’s main page, if one has been developed, as well as a link to be added to the listserv for that group.

Educators Alliance
Preparing the future workforce for the constantly changing profession of medical transcription can be daunting. This alliance for MT educators provides a much-needed resource for discussing the challenges related to MT education, addressing standards for training, and exchanging ideas and insights about what works in the classroom, both in person and virtually.

EHR Task Force
This group works together to research and report on the evolving state of the electronic health record. It coordinates a messaging effort to AHDI members to prepare MTs for the EHR future, makes recommendations to the Certification Commission for Health Information Technology (CCHIT) on EHR standards related to the transcription domain, and works with the association on strengthening strategic alliances that position MT in the EHR.

Legislative Issues Group (LIG)
Legislative and regulatory changes that impact healthcare documentation and medical transcription are of critical focus to the association. This group works together to track any legislation at the state and federal levels that has the potential to impact patient safety, privacy and security of health information, and workforce development in allied health. The group coordinates advocacy efforts at the state and national levels – including lobby days, letter writing campaigns, and contact with legislative officials and regulatory bodies.

Managers/Supervisors Special Interest Group
This group is made of up industry managers and supervisors who have a vested interest in working together to identify the needs and challenges of MT management, developing resources and standards for managers and supervisors, and exchanging ideas and insights about this important role in the industry. In 2006, the Managers/Supervisors Group conducted a survey entitled: Issues and Trends in Medical Transcription. You can view the survey results here.

Military Spouses Group
This group is for military spouses who are associated with medical transcription whether it be interest in pursuing a career, a current student, or practicing MT. The group was established to address and support the unique needs and interests of military spouses as they pertain to medical transcription as an integral part of the AHDI/MTIA initiative which includes the National Registered Apprentice Program.

Quality Assessment Special Interest Group
Focused on defining and addressing quality assessment for healthcare documentation, this group is made up of quality assessment coordinators, editors, managers and supervisors who have a strong desire to promote quality standards for the profession and exchange ideas for developing, implementing, and maintaining an effective QA program.

Student Alliance
