Session Abstract:

By the time they complete their education in the profession of healthcare documentation, medical transcription students and new practitioners are well aware that in their field nothing is as unchanging as change.  The dawn of each new day seems to bring fresh revelations and new directions in documentation technology and employment opportunities.  Outsourcing, offshoring, business consolidations, and salary restructuring are all derailing traditional routes to individual success and providing unique, previously unknown, roads towards such success.

Not many years ago, the arrival of the EHR was accompanied by confident predictions that the skills of medical transcriptionists would rapidly become obsolete.  Somewhat paradoxically, at about the same time, the rapid growth of transcription companies in India, the Philippines, and elsewhere, suggested a continuing need for medical transcriptionists but a need that would be completely met by practitioners outside the United States.  Now, more than a decade into the 21st century, we are seeing a profession that is very much alive, in the United States as well as globally.  Demand for people with the HDS skill set is growing as the number of medical errors increases, become the 3rd leading cause of death in the United States (heart disease and cancer being #1 and #2).  There is now a shortage of experienced HDS professionals, especially because the methodology is different from that of 20 years ago.  What we are seeing now is not extinction but transformation.

Beginning with a “big picture” perspective, this webinar will map some important details of today’s healthcare documentation landscape and provide suggestions about career decision-making for students and HDS practitioners as they begin their career journeys, dispelling the myth that transcription is a dying trade.

Learning Objectives:

  1. The Big Picture:  An overview of the healthcare documentation profession, and why an understanding of where we are today and how to pursue a successful career.
  2. Mapping the 4 key components of success for healthcare documentation specialists: Education, Certification, Quality, and Networking.
  3. Medical transcriptionist, VR editor, healthcare documentation specialist, and more – Where will you fit?
  4. Getting and keeping the job:  Evaluating opportunities and employers, passing the tests, meeting both your goals and employers’ needs.

Audrey Kirchner, CHDS, is also a long-time HDS practitioner, owning a small transcription service since 1989, as well as having worked for several national companies over the years as a production QA specialist, transcriptionist, and speech rec editor. She has been an educator as well for several online colleges as well as her local community college. She has written curriculum and has been published in Plexus several times. She has also given multiple educational webinars for AHDI as well as online colleges. She has seen the many changes in the profession over the years, and as an advocate for healthcare documentation, believes that there is a yet-to-be-discovered dynamic and prestigious career that is yet to unfold. She believes that alerting people to the importance of the integrity of the healthcare record will serve students as well as the public well and lead students to a highly specialized professional assignation of tremendous value.
