Session Description

This presentation will provide key strategies for improving writing and public speaking skills. The attendees will be provided with tips for becoming an effective writer along with examples of topics and resources they can use for additional research on this topic. Guidance for becoming and improving as a speaker will be provided with tips for success and ways to improve the delivery of a presentation. Also, provided are suggestions as to where to submit written articles and the baby steps to take to grow skills in order to accomplish more challenging speaking opportunities.


Learning Objectives

  1. To equip and motivate attendees to expand their comfort zone to writing articles.
  2. To provide attendees with proven strategies for using PowerPoint and audiovisual aids.
  3. To provide a path to build skills and confidence so that the attendee will pursue their own journey to become a public speaker. 
  4. To make the attendees aware of the impact of their body language – both good and bad.
  5. To provide the attendees with multiple resources for both effective writing and for giving presentations.
  6. To offer the attendees examples of a speaker introduction and biosketch, as well as the appropriate uses of clipart within presentations.


About the Speaker

Brenda's background includes 40+ years in the industry as a practitioner medical transcriptionist, supervisor, medical transcription service manager, instructor in MT programs, quality assurance specialist, compliance officer, and now as an industry expert and consultant. 


She has been active in the Association for Healthcare Documentation Integrity since 1981, was credentialed as a Certified Medical Transcriptionist (CMT) over 35 years ago, and received the designation of Fellow in 2002. She served on the AHDI Board of Directors for a total of 12 years and as its President in 1988 and 1995. She has been honored as the Member of the Year by local, state, and national organizations for AHDI, commissioned as an Honorary Kentucky Colonel in 1993, and awarded the first Distinguished Lifetime Achievement Award by AHDI in 2005.


She has spoken at hundreds of meetings and events, and have authored numerous different articles related to the medical transcription industry, standards, compliance, healthcare documentation, technology, and leadership.
