Healthcare Documentation Integrity Week

National Medical Transcriptionist Week has traditionally been a week-long celebration of the contributions healthcare documentation specialists make toward ensuring complete and accurate patient health records. We are not alone in this! There are many healthcare professionals who contribute to the integrity of the medical record, so our celebration will now more aptly be titled Healthcare Documentation Integrity Week.

All Hands on Deck is a call to action! Join us in recognizing all who impact the accuracy and integrity of each patient’s unique healthcare story.

In recent years an unprecedented number of job roles, titles, and duties have evolved in the healthcare documentation arena. Every transcriptionist, editor, document integrity auditor, scribe, coder, CDI specialist, clinician, etc., is responsible for their part in validating the healthcare record. Each must ensure the highest standards of integrity when documenting patient care because mistakes matter. Mistakes can cause injuries and they can cost lives. It takes All Hands on Deck to maintain the accuracy of the patient’s story.

Because voice recognition technology and electronic medical records are ubiquitous in healthcare today, healthcare documentation professionals must continue to apply their years of experience and critical-thinking skills to efficiently ensure accuracy of the record in description, meaning, and context. When patient safety, confidentiality, and HIPAA compliance are prioritized, the value of documentation professionals to the healthcare team is undeniable. By identifying and reducing errors and ambiguities, minimizing the potential for risk, and helping to ensure proper reimbursement, their impact on the revenue cycle is silent but profound. Technology alone simply cannot begin to provide the scope of quality services that we offer.

It’s time for All Hands on Deck! As healthcare documentation specialists, we must continue to evolve and expand our skillsets to meet whatever demands are put before us. We must demonstrate our commitment and value by earning an RHDS or CHDS credential. We must continue working together to spread the message that healthcare documentation professionals continue to be the superior choice for healthcare documentation integrity and patient safety. We applaud and celebrate healthcare documentation professionals everywhere!
